Ask two bunkhouse suppliers for a quote and you may get two very different prices for what looks like the same cabin. The difference is usually hidden in the steel. Understanding one specification — IS 2062 Grade B — will tell you more about build quality than any brochure photograph.

What IS 2062 actually specifies

IS 2062 is the Indian Standard for hot-rolled structural steel. Grade B (E250 B) guarantees a minimum yield strength of 250 MPa, controlled carbon content, and — critically for fabricated structures — reliable weldability. When a base frame is built from certified ISMB 150 sections and the shell from 1.6mm IS 2062 Grade B corrugated sheet, the structure behaves predictably under load.

Why it matters for a building that travels

A bunkhouse is not a static structure. It is craned onto a trailer, hauled over desert tracks, craned off, and often relocated several times across its life. Every lift concentrates stress at the corners and every kilometre of rough road works the welds. Non-certified steel with inconsistent yield strength cracks at exactly these points — usually discovered when a unit arrives on site with a racked frame and doors that no longer close.

The failure modes cheap steel hides

• Frame racking — doors and windows jam after transport
• Weld cracking — moisture ingress follows, then corrosion from the inside
• Floor deflection — noticeable bounce under load, worsening over time
• Lifting point failure — the most dangerous, and entirely preventable

Why major clients specify it

Vedanta, Cairn, and similar operators write IS 2062 Grade B into their accommodation specifications because their HSE teams treat bunkhouses as lifted loads. A unit that cannot document its material certification may simply not be allowed on site.
