On paper, every project camp is HSE compliant. In practice, compliance is a daily operating discipline — and remote locations test it harder than any city facility. Distance weakens supervision, supply chains, and emergency response all at once. A practical framework helps.
Design compliance in, don’t inspect it in
The cheapest HSE intervention happens at the camp layout stage: separation between fuel storage and accommodation, assembly points that people can actually reach, lighting along the routes workers walk at night, kitchens positioned away from waste streams. Retrofitting any of these after commissioning is disruptive and expensive.
The four daily disciplines
- Electrical integrity — earthing and ELCB function verified on schedule, not on failure
- Water and food safety — daily monitoring of raw and cooked food, periodic water quality testing, cold-chain temperature logs
- Fire readiness — extinguisher checks, clear escape routes, no quiet accumulation of combustibles behind the dry store
- Housekeeping — the leading indicator auditors read first; a camp that looks controlled usually is
Documentation is half the compliance
Client HSE frameworks — Cairn, Vedanta, Adani, OIL — all converge on the same expectation: records. Daily safety logs, incident and near-miss reports, inspection registers, training rosters. When an audit arrives, the difference between a finding and a pass is usually whether the discipline was written down.
Emergency response at remote distance
A medical evacuation plan that assumes a 20-minute ambulance is fiction in the Thar Desert. Remote camps need a first-aid room, trained responders on every shift, a communications protocol that works without mobile coverage, and a rehearsed evacuation route. Rehearsed is the operative word.
Singhal Group operates camps under the HSE frameworks of India’s largest operators, with camp management that includes periodic audits and monthly compliance reporting as standard.
