Every project controller eventually runs the numbers on owning excavators versus renting them. The spreadsheet usually says ownership is cheaper — right up until the first idle month, the first major repair, and the first project in a different state. Here is the fuller comparison.

What the ownership spreadsheet leaves out

  • Utilisation risk — owned machines earn nothing between projects, but EMIs, insurance, and operator salaries continue
  • Maintenance depth — a hydraulic pump failure on an owned excavator is your problem, your downtime, and your spare-parts inventory
  • Mobilisation — moving owned machines between distant sites costs real money and management attention
  • Disposal — resale values on heavily-used earthmoving plant are unforgiving

When renting clearly wins

Project-duration requirements, remote locations, mixed equipment lists, and any situation where downtime is expensive. A rental contract with operator and maintenance included converts all of the risks above into a single predictable rate — and when a machine fails, the supplier’s problem is replacing it, fast.

When owning makes sense

Continuous multi-year utilisation of the same machine class at the same location — a captive mine, a fixed plant. If a machine will genuinely work 2,000+ hours a year for five years in one place, ownership economics improve substantially.

What to demand from a rental partner

  • An owned fleet, not brokered spot-market machines — availability promises are only as good as the assets behind them
  • Operators included, HSE-trained and familiar with permit-to-work systems
  • In-house maintenance with on-site support for long contracts
  • A reference list you can actually call

Singhal Group’s equipment rental fleet runs 69+ owned units — Hitachi excavators, 25–45 ton hydraulic cranes, graders, bulldozers, dumpers, and forklifts — with contracts across Vedanta, ONGC, and Adani projects.
